September 13, 2011, marks the centennial of the birth of Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music. Born just south of Owensboro in Rosine, the family home has been restored and is open for tours. It is also the location of one of the biggest Bluegrass Celebrations every fall, Jerusalem Ridge--four days of live performances by Bluegrass bands and individuals from across the country. Many who played with or knew Bill Monroe personally. Monroe is buried with his family in the Rosine cemetery.
The International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro has already kicked off the Centennial Birthday Celebration and has special exhibits and events planned for this year-long commemoration of Bluegrass music.
